DNA Testing from a Hair Sample

The most discreet way to collect DNA is to refer to the list of non-standard samplings. Indeed, DNA is present on all cells of the body including hair and fur. It is therefore entirely possible to study and compare two DNA samples taken from hair or, more precisely, from the roots, also called follicles.

The effectiveness of hair testing

A hair consists of a shaft, a bulb, and a root. It perfectly resists the wear of time, which is why it can be preserved for a long time and retain all genetic characteristics. While it originates in the hair follicle, the hair forms from the bulb. It is from the bulb that DNA extraction is performed. For it to be analyzed, it must still be attached to the hair. Cut strands of hair are useless because they are not viable. Avoid shaved hairs as well.

How and where to collect hair?

On average, 7 to 10 hairs in good condition (with follicles) are needed to have a good extraction rate situated between 70 and 75%. The hairbrush is the ideal niche to find intact hairs because a healthy individual loses between 40 to 50 hairs per day. During the collection, make sure to wear gloves. It is important to avoid picking up the hairs directly with your fingers to prevent transferring your DNA by contact.
